origine du groupe
Il y a beaucoup de choses à savoir sur 30 Seconds To Mars. A commencer par les débuts du groupe.

Il est difficile de dater précisément la date de sa création : Jared & Shannon Leto, les deux fondateurs, sont frères, ils font de la musique depuis leur plus jeune âge. La ville où ils ont grandi, Boissier City (Louisiane), est selon Shannon "une espèce de communauté d'artistes". Ce qu'il faut savoir aussi, c'est que Jared étant jeune, lisait beaucoup de livres sur la mythologie grecque, ce qui explique peut-être l'ambiance du groupe. Après le lycée, Shannon étudie la photographie, tandis que Jared commence à connaître le cinéma. Ils se retrouvent plus tard, en 1992. C'est Nirvana qui domine les sons et Jared se laisse vite entraîner, tandis que Shannon préfère les années 80 (Depeche Mode...) Mais Jared reste attiré par le cinéma. Après plusieurs essais (dont la série "Angela 15 ans"), les deux frères décident enfin de fonder leur groupe.

Ils choisissent pour cela 2 autres guitaristes : Solon Bixler et Kevin Drake. Le groupe passe dans des petits clubs de Los Angeles, sous différents noms : en effet, leur priorité n'est pas d'être connus : ils veulent "garder leur liberté". Un de leurs noms est Life On Mars (clin d'oeil à David Bowie). Le vrai nom, 30 Seconds To Mars vient d'un livre sur le progrès technologique d'un certain professeur Harvard, dont un intertitre portait ce nom. Selon lui, la technologie avance vite et il peut dire qu'on est plus qu'à 30 secondes de Mars. Et selon Jared, cela symbolisait bien l'atmosphère du groupe. En fin 1998, le groupe signe son 1er contrat sur l'un des labels indépendant rock les plus puissants, en effet il connaît déjà un certain succès sur le net. L'ambiance rock voir "métal" du groupe a vite séduit les internautes.

Mais le cinéma rapelle vite Jared et il joue dans certains films tels que Fight Club, et Requiem for a dream. La production du 1er album est donc retardée et est achevée fin 2001, soit 3 ans après le contrat du groupe. L'album comporte 12 titres qui symbolisent un voyage intérieur où la mélodie tient une place importante, parmi des sons de guitare où la musique devient dure. La belle voix de Jared Leto trouve parfaitement bien sa place dedans. Le groupe se donne alors plusieurs symboles pour renforcer cette ambiance (le phénix, les glyhpes, ou encore la devise Provehito in altum). La Mars Army, formée par les Echelons (les fans du groupe) se forme en même temps.

Pour la tournée à venir, ils recruttent alors le bassiste Matt Wachter. Pour eux, leur musique est leur vie. Les choses plus sérieuses commencent. Au printemps 2002, le groupe Puddle of Mud leur propose de jouer avec eux, en 1ère partie. Jared accepte : le groupe passe de 50 spectateurs à des milliers. Plusieurs Echelons vont alors rejoindre leur cause. En septembre, le groupe se sépare de Kevin Drake, qui semblait ne pas voir le même état d'esprit qu'eux. Ils ne sont plus que 4 : Jared, Shannon, Matt et Solon. Fin 2002, le groupe continue ses shows avec Sevendust. Mais début 2003, Solon décide de quitter l'aventure, peu emballé par la tournée mondiale. 8 jours plus tard, Tomo Milicevic, d'origine croate, passe une audition et devient le nouveau guitariste.

Fin 2003, Jared est appelé par Oliver Stone qui lui offre un rôle dans le film Alexandre : c'est parti pour plusieurs mois de tournage. Dès février 2004 commence l'enregistrement du prochain album, les sessions durent 1 ans et demi, tandis que le groupe continue sa tournée mondiale. Le groupe participe d'avantage à l'écriture et à la composition du CD. 40 titres sont enregistrés, mais n'ont pas été distribués : Jared dit qu'ils en sont pas à la hauteur de l'album. C'est en avril 2005 que l'album est prêt. Jared l'a nommé A beautiful Lie, comme le titre de la 2ème chanson. Malheureusement, l'album est disponible avant sa sortie sur le net : le groupe repousse sa sortie en y ajoutant 2 chansons. Le 30 août 2005, le CD sort aux US. Il est différent de l'autre : certains fans sont déçus. C'est l'émotion qui domine et les textes sont plus personnels.

Le single The Kill sort aussi. Le 4 mars 2006, le groupe commence une tournée sans personne en tête d'affiche avec eux. En mai, MTV diffuse le clip de The Kill : c'est plus qu'un clip, un court-métrage qui met en scène une ambiance semblable au film Shining. Le 1er février 2007, A Beautiful Lie devient disque de platine. Le lendemain, le groupe passe pour la 1ère fois en France au Bataclan. Le 1er mars, de retour aux States pour le festival Taste Of Chaos, Matt Wachter annonce son départ du groupe pour raisons familiales. Le remplacant devient Tim Kelleher, qui n'est pas encore officielement le nouveau bassiste : peut-être que le groupe le teste comme Kevin Drake plus tôt...

Le 30 mai, le groupe revient en France : ils font un concert à Bercy, complet, en 1ère partie de Linkin Park. Le lendemain, ils sont à l'Elysée Montmatre pour un concert solo. La salle est pleine et très vite, les places ont été vendues. En ce moment, le groupe continue de faire ses tournées, un passage à Paris est prévu pour bientôt.

Quelques titres de leur 3ème CD ont été chantés sur scène et se promènent sur le net, comme Some Other Son, Sisters Of Heresy ou encore The Believer. Selon Jared, "il verra l'avènement d'une nouvelle religion et sera plus mythologique". De nouveaux symboles seront utilisés, comme le Schwarze sonne, un soleil noir qui symbolise le cercle infini et utilisé autrefois par les nazis, mais son existence remonte à l'époque des Vikings et qu'à la base, il ne symbolisait rien de ce que les nazis en ont fait. Mais quand on demande à Jared quand sortira le prochain CD, il répond "peut-être en 2024 avec un peu de chance"... Espérons qu'il ne tardera pas.

Pour conclure, on peut décrire 30 Seconds To Mars comme un groupe unique, mythique, et peut-être légendaire, gravé à jamais dans l'histoire du rock, avec une armée de fans qui feraient tout pour eux.
